What Is PCB Reference?

This page explains how to use the PCB Reference field when building an online PCB quote. It helps you save more background information for future review, repeat orders, and internal identification.

PCB Name vs. PCB Reference

PCB Name is usually a short board name or part number. It is better for quick identification.

PCB Reference is better for storing more complete background information, such as project usage, revision notes, customer internal remarks, assembly purpose, or any message you may want to check again in the future.

What to write in PCB Reference

  • Project name, board purpose, or internal tracking note
  • Version / revision information such as Rev A, Rev B, EVT, DVT, PVT
  • Special customer identification or engineering comments
  • Useful remarks that may help you recognize this order later

What not to rely on this field for

  • Do not use it as a substitute for Gerber file naming
  • Do not assume it replaces formal fabrication notes
  • Do not put overly long text that is difficult to review quickly

Step 1 — Enter PCB Reference during online quote

When you build a quote online, you can input your PCB Reference in the right-side input area. Compared with the PCB Name field, this area allows you to save more detailed information.

Step 2 — PCB Reference stays with the order record

After the order is placed, the PCB Reference message remains with the order record. This makes it easier to check the order background, intended use, or engineering note later.

Helpful suggestion

If you often reorder similar boards, using a clear and consistent PCB Reference format can make future lookup much easier. For example: Project Name + Board Function + Revision.
